Infant Bodywork & Intra-Oral Therapy

Feeding struggles, tension, reflux, or difficulty settling can feel overwhelming in the early weeks with a new baby. Infant bodywork offers soothing support to help babies move, feed, and feel more comfortable.

Infant bodywork is a gentle, hands-on treatment provided by trained paediatric physiotherapists to help release tension, improve movement and alignment, and promote baby’s early development

At Butterfly, our physiotherapists use specialized bodywork and intra-oral techniques to support feeding, reduce body tension, and help prevent early postural concerns such as torticollis (looking or tilting to one side) or plagiocephaly (flat head). Treatment also supports digestion, sleep, comfort, and overall movement as your baby grows.

What Is Infant Bodywork?

Babies spend nine months curled up in the womb, and it’s common for them to develop areas of tightness or tension in the body. Some babies may also experience strain related to positioning during pregnancy or birth.

Infant bodywork uses gentle touch, movement, and therapeutic techniques to help babies release tension and move more comfortably. This can support feeding, tummy time, sleep, and healthy movement patterns during development.

Babies can also hold tension in their face, jaw, cheeks, and neck, which may affect their ability to latch, suck, and feed comfortably.

At Butterfly, our physiotherapists are trained and experienced in:

  • Gentle techniques to release tension in the neck, shoulders, hips, and spine
  • Facial and body massage to address areas of tightness
  • Simple intra-oral techniques to support tongue and jaw function
  • Parent education and home strategies to support progress between visits

What Is Intra-Oral Therapy?

Intra-oral therapy involves gentle hands-on techniques performed inside your baby’s mouth to support sucking, swallowing, and oral coordination.

These techniques may help improve tongue, jaw, and cheek movement and can support babies who are having difficulty feeding.

Intra-oral therapy may help with:

  • Latch difficulties
  • Clicking or leaking during feeds
  • Poor suction or weak sucking
  • Feeding fatigue
  • Breast or bottle frustration
  • Tension in the jaw, cheeks, or tongue

Tongue Tie Support

Intra-oral therapy is often used before and after a tongue tie release procedure to help improve oral mobility, reduce tension, and support new movement patterns during healing.

Common Benefits Parents May Notice

Every baby is different, but families often notice improvements in:

Feeding

  • Improved latch and feeding efficiency
  • Less frustration during breast or bottle feeds
  • Reduced reflux or gassiness
  • Increased comfort for both baby and parent

Tummy Time & Movement

  • Improved comfort during tummy time
  • Easier head turning to both sides
  • Better symmetry and movement patterns

Sleep & Regulation

  • Improved comfort and relaxation
  • Easier settling and more restful sleep

Postural Concerns

  • Head-turn preference (torticollis)
  • Flat spots on the head (plagiocephaly)
  • Early movement asymmetries

When Should You Consider Infant Bodywork?

Your baby may benefit from an assessment if they:

  • Have difficulty latching or feeding
  • Prefer turning their head to one side
  • Seem unusually stiff or tense
  • Dislike tummy time
  • Experience reflux or excessive gassiness
  • Are being considered for a tongue tie release
  • Have already had a tongue tie procedure

Appointments are gentle, baby-led, and paced around feeding and comforting as needed. Your physiotherapist will assess your baby’s movement, posture, feeding function, and areas of tension, then use hands-on techniques and teach you simple strategies to continue at home.

At Butterfly Paediatric Therapy, our physiotherapists work collaboratively with your family and other professionals involved in your baby’s care, including physicians, paediatricians, International Board Certified Lactation Consultants (IBCLCs), midwives, doulas, osteopaths, and chiropractors.  Our goal is to help both babies and parents feel more comfortable, confident, and supported during the early stages of development.
