Speech-Language Pathology
Speech-Language Pathologists have expertise in speech and language development as well as communication disorders.
A Speech-Language Pathologist can address:
- Speech delays and disorders (articulation, phonology, speech clarity, apraxia and other motor speech disorders)
- Language delays and disorders (expression and comprehension in oral and non-verbal contexts)
- Fluency disorders (stuttering)
- Voice and resonance disorders
- Cognitive deficits (social communication skills, reasoning, problem solving and executive functions)
- Pre-literacy and literacy skills (phonological awareness, decoding, reading comprehension and writing)
- Social skills difficulties
Every child will receive a formal assessment during the initial visit with a Speech-Language Pathologist. For young children, although we try to complete a standardized assessment, the assessment is frequently play-based. For older children, usually a standardized speech and language assessment would be completed, as well as interviews and observations in different situations. Following the assessment, results will be provided and a treatment plan will be designed to meet the individual needs of the child and their family.
Continuing Education is important to our Speech-Language Pathologists and they are skilled in a number of treatment approaches including:
Hanen Programs®, PROMPT (PROMPTS for Restructuring Oral Muscular Phonetic Targets), Lidcombe Program for Stuttering, Ascend SMARTER Intervention Structured Literacy Approach, Meaningful Speech and the Social Thinking Curriculum. In addition, our therapists remain current with new research and frequently enroll in continuing education webinars and courses to learn new and exciting ways to help our clients spread their wings.
