Your Child’s First Therapy Visit: What to Expect at Butterfly

Your Child’s First Visit: What to Expect

Starting therapy can feel like a big step for both you and your child, but Butterfly’s goal is to make the experience welcoming, supportive, and stress-free from the very first visit!

What you’ll learn:
How to prepare your child, what to bring, and exactly what to expect during your first stress-free, play-based therapy assessment at Butterfly.

Things To Prepare & Keep in Mind:

  • Make sure to fill out any intake or registration forms prior to your assessment date. This information helps your therapist better understand your child’s needs and prepare for the assessment. Not filling out the intake forms may cause you to lose valuable time with your therapist.
  • Butterfly is a shoe free clinic! In order to keep things clean and tidy, we ask for families to remove any outdoor shoes and place them in our coat room. If more comfortable, feel free to bring indoor shoes or slippers.
  • Double check each clinic address on our Contact Us page so that you know which location your appointment is scheduled at! To ensure you arrive at your appointment on time, enter our address in your GPS so that it leads you straight to our door.
  • If you have any reports or documents that you feel is useful for the therapist to take a look at, the best thing to do is email it to us to add to your child’s file prior to the assessment. Alternatively, you can also physically bring these to your assessment and your therapist will save a copy.
  • *For any feeding assessments: we ask you to bring (2) preferred and (2) non-preferred foods for the therapist to work with. For example: two foods that your child enjoys/oftens eats and another two foods your child struggles with/you’d like for them to improve on.

Before the Assessment:

To help your child prepare, it can be useful to talk about therapy in a positive and simple way. Let them know they will meet a friendly therapist, be in a welcoming environment and remind them that you’ll be there to support them every step of the way! Framing the visit as a chance to learn and have fun can help ease any worries. Our therapists are experienced in helping children feel safe and comfortable, taking time to build trust and move at a pace that works for your child.

While sitting in our waiting area, feel free to enjoy any displayed books and board activities to ease any nerves! Our Client Experience team is also happy to talk to you and your child through the process and answer any questions you may have.

During The Assessment:

We do require a parent or guardian to be present during the initial assessment as the therapists may ask questions about your child’s history, routines, and goals. Your child may participate in a variety of activities designed to evaluate their skills in a fun and engaging way! These activities often look like play but help therapists observe important areas of development. As the assessment wraps up, the therapist will then make a personalized treatment plan for your child, provide at home-strategies, and discuss booking follow-up appointments!

“Every child’s journey begins with understanding, and every assessment is a step toward helping them build confidence, growth, and success!”
