Fine Motor Skills

Fine motor skills refer to the ability to use the small muscles of our hands and fingers to perform tasks that require precision and dexterity. These skills involve the coordination of our hand and finger movements to manipulate objects and tools. Children use their fine motor skills for many everyday activities, such as writing, drawing, using utensils, manipulating small objects, and using electronic devices. They are also important for academic tasks such as reading, spelling, and math, as well as for participating in hobbies and recreational activities.

Is your child reluctant to do writing? Do they struggle to keep up with their peers? Do they have difficulty learning new motor skills?

Our Occupational Therapists can assess the following skill areas to determine whether your child is meeting developmental expectations and determine if their fine motor skills are impacting their participation at school, home, or in the community.

  • Pencil Grasp
  • Hand-eye coordination
  • Visual-motor skills
  • Printing
  • Cursive writing
  • Keyboarding
  • Spatial awareness / perceptual skills
  • Scissor skills

What can we do?

Our Occupational therapists use creative, fun, and multi-sensory approaches which can be an effective way to engage children and help them develop their fine motor skills in a way that feels enjoyable and rewarding.

OTs can provide a wide range of recommendations and strategies to help children with fine motor skill difficulties meet functional demands and expectations in daily life, including at school and at home. Our OTs may recommend the use of assistive devices or equipment or computer softwares, modified pencil grips to support children’s fine motor skills.
