Infant Motor Milestone Development

Rolling, sitting, crawling, and walking … oh my! It’s exciting to see your child grow and begin to learn new skills as they develop, but sometimes these skills can be challenging and your child may need some help progressing through their motor milestones. Every child will develop at their own pace, but keep in mind there are average timelines in which a particular skill should emerge and be mastered. Our physiotherapists are here to help you and your child if they are having difficulty with their gross motor skill progression.

Our physiotherapists are skilled at assessing and treating difficulty or delay with several gross motor skills including rolling from tummy to back and back to tummy, sitting independently, crawling, pulling to stand, cruising, standing independently without support and walking independently without support.

At Butterfly, your physiotherapist will perform a comprehensive assessment of your child’s body alignment and posture, range of motion, strength, reflexes, and gross motor skills. They will observe how your child moves and identify areas for improvement to help with gross motor milestone development.

Based on the assessment findings, your physiotherapist will develop a personalized treatment program that may include parent and family education, handling techniques to promote skill development, stretching exercises, and strengthening exercises. Your physiotherapist will provide you with home recommendations, as well as their recommendations for ongoing physiotherapy treatment to best fit your child’s needs.

If you have any concerns about your child’s gross motor skill development, or just want to have their skills assessed by a trained professional, our physiotherapists are here to help. Early intervention is key to helping your child develop and attain new gross motor skills, and therefore, we recommend physiotherapy intervention as soon as possible once a delay is identified.
