Neurological, Genetic and Developmental Conditions
At Butterfly, our physiotherapists have experience working with children of all different ages and functional levels, who may have a diagnosis of a neurological, genetic or developmental condition. We have experience with a wide range of conditions including but not limited to global developmental delay, developmental coordination disorder, hypotonia or hypertonia, cerebral palsy, acquired brain injury, seizure disorders and spina bifida. Also treated at Butterfly are children with Angelman Syndrome, Down Syndrome, Rett Syndrome, Prader-Willi Syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome and muscular dystrophy.
Depending on the child, some children may undergo specilaized procedures to assist with their body functioning such as Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy, Percutaneous Mysofacial Lengthening, Botox treatment and serial casting. Physiotherapy treatment is often indicated and beneficial after these procedures, and the Butterfly team is here to help!
Your physiotherapist will complete a comprehensive assessment and develop an individualized treatment plan for your child. They will identify your child’s strengths and areas for future growth. They will help your child attain new gross motor skills, maximize their physical function and optimize overall quality of life.
Various techniques will be used during your child’s treatment sessions including muscle stretching and strengthening, balance and proprioception exercises to help develop body awareness as well as mobility training to promote function.
Why Butterfly?
We understand the impact that a neurological, genetic or developmental condition can have on both your child and your family as a whole. Our goal is to promote new learning and development, while focusing on maximizing your child’s potential and improving their overall quality of life. Many of our physiotherapists continue to expand their knowledge through ongoing educational opportunities and are trained in Neurodevelopmental Treatment (NDT), Cuevas Medek Exercises (CME), use of our body weight support treadmill as well as our neuromuscular electrical stimulation machine. At Butterfly, we strive to make our treatment sessions fun and engaging to help your child achieve their personal goals
